A.P. Art History is designed to meet the requirements outlined for an introductory college course in Art History: an understanding and knowledge of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within diverse historical and cultural contexts. Students examine major forms of artistic expression from the past and the present from a variety of cultures and learn to look at works of art critically, with intelligence and sensitivity. Students learn strategies of analysis and develop appropriate language for analyzing works of art and architecture. Although some periods of non-western art are studied, emphasis is placed on Western European art. Finally, students are asked to develop a firm understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design as well as to become fluent in the use of fundamental art historical terminology.

In the autumn of 2005, Steve Nelson's art classes helped to produce part of the touring installation art exhibit called "800,000" which is a "redemptive hope in Rwanda."

Mr. Pingry believes that students should begin with the traditional manually operated SLR cameras so that they can learn the basics of photographic composition an creation. Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts

Two Grier faculty, one current and one former, were involved in the recent events related to the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in State College, PA. This is an event that occurs each year in July which draws many artists to the area to exhibit their work to thousands of visitors.

Heidi Zimbler, Grier's jewelry and pottery teacher, displayed her work at "The People's Choice" venue in Boalsburg during the festival.

Kathleen Frank, who formerly taught printmaking at Grier, had a booth in downtown State College on Allen Street. Interestingly enough, since leaving Grier in 2000, she has changed the focus of her work entirely and now has a successful business in landscape paintings.

FACULTY PROFILES

Laurie Cave is a native of Pennsylvania and the head of Grier's art department. Her father was an artist and art professor and her mother was a costumer. Her childhood was filled with the scent of linseed oil and the crunch of taffeta. Long hours in studio were an early way of life for the whole family. Laurie's formal art study took place at the Ivy School of Professional Art.

Her first “art job” was art editor of the Seattle Sound News in the early 70’s. This was quickly replaced by the more adventuresome occupation of welder at Lockheed Shipyard.

Discovery and life-long learning are important to Laurie. Workshops at the Torpedo Factory, College of Santa Fe, Bennington, and University of the Arts are a few of her favorite learning experiences.

Laurie was a three year Artist in Education resident at Tyrone Area High School, a Pennsylvania roster artist in the early 90’s, and started teaching at Grier in 1993. She is still professionally costuming and is a current working member of IATSE local 636 where she is senior wardrobe person. Laurie has worked in community theatre for over 20 years, with sixteen years in professional theater giving her opportunity to work on great shows such as Les Miserables, Ragtime, Porgy and Bess, Cats, Peter Pan, and to work with great companies such as Bolshoi Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem, American Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Ballet Met, and New York City Opera. Husband Michael, daughters Hannah, Ajia, and Shalah (Grier grad 99’), share her philosophy of life. Don’t be a spectator, be a catalyst!!

Yong Sook Kim-Lambert was born and grew up in Seoul, South Korea. She earned a B.F.A. at Hong- Ik University in Seoul, a university famous for the quality of its art department. In the years following her graduation, she taught art and started her career as a professional artist. She entered several exhibits and received awards, including the award for most promising young talent at an exhibit in Kyoto, Japan, in 1986.

She met her husband François (also a teacher at Grier) in 1986 while he was teaching in Korea. They founded a family and moved to Canada where Mrs. Lambert pursued her career as a painter and completed several post-graduate courses. In the years since then, she has spent time traveling in several countries, such as Japan, France, and Indonesia – experiences which have helped to shape both the person and the artist. These experiences make her an asset in an environment as diverse as that of the Grier School.

Mrs. Lambert joined the Grier School in 2001 and has since taught watercolor, weaving/fiber art (batik). Also, she has led three annual two-week trips to Paris over our Spring break. She loves the ethnic diversity and the intimate setting of the Grier community where she tries to act as a catalyst in the production of creative works of art by young women.
