The Grier School experience is made up of many different days, all combining to contribute to the success of the whole experience.

"HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE GRIER EXPERIENCE?”

Greetings from Chicago, it's Amy, from the Class of 1989. I was just surfing the web and thought I'd say hello. I don't touch bases with the Grier community as often as I should, life can get busier than I would like it to be. I was looking at thewebsite and remembering my life at Grier. It seems like a million years ago but the memories are still fresh and good.

Grier really is a special place. I do still keep in very close contact with a great many of my Grier friends. Chelsea, Christelle, Melissa, Liz, etc. I was actually present when Chelsea had her beautiful daughter. It is amazing what a sisterhood we all have, basically a family. I often try to explain it to others but I can't.

Somehow or another, Grier has left all of us with a special bond that cannot be explained or duplicated. It takes a lot of work to maintain a community as special as Grier. I just wanted to say hello and let you know the alumnae realize and appreciate how hard you all work for the school.

The morning drama skit was a version of Goldilocks on February 16.

TYPICAL DAY:
At its core, Grier's daily schedule is defined by its structure. Monday through Friday are predictable in their scheduling, with the day starting at 7:15 with breakfast and ending at 10:15 with "room bell."

Between those times, a typical day follows this schedule:

7:15 Breakfast
8:00 Morning assembly: skits, announcements, musical performances
8:12 Morning classes begin: Five classes of 42 minutes duration with three minute breaks between classes.
12:05 Lunch
12:40 Extra-help: A thirty minute time when students may get extra-help from their teachers.
1:10 Afternoon classes begin: Two classes of 42 minutes duration with a three minute break between classes.
2:45 Athletics and other activities begin. To fulfil the Grier School athletic requirement, each student must take a minimum of four hours of athletics each week. Most athletic classes last about 50 minutes with the exception of varsity sports practices which usually meet for at least 90 minutes a day.
6:00 Dinner
6:50 Drama and musical group rehearsal time.
7:45 Required study hall for all students (Sunday through Thursday)
9:30 Formal study hall ends
10:00 Room bell
10:15 Lights out for the youngest students. Older students have the privilege of staying up a little longer.
10:30 The school is very quiet, as all students go to sleep.

EXTRA-LONG PERIOD DAY:
Grier has seven marking periods throughout the course of the school year, with three falling before Christmas and four after Christmas. During the third week of each marking period, we run what we call a "Long Day Class Schedule." This means that on Wednesday and Thursday of that week the classes are extra-long. Grier does this in order to provide teachers with the opportunity to work on special projects or labs that take longer than the usual alotted time for class.

Ann and Katie are talking about being roommates next year.

The schedule for these days runs as follows:

Wednesday Schedule
Period 1: 8:15-9:42
Period 5: 9:45-10:27
Period 2: 10:30-11:57
Lunch

Period 3: 1:10-2:37
Athletics schedules run as usual.
Thursday Schedule

Period 5: 9:45-10:27

Sunset on October 3, 2007.

OPENING DAY at Grier stretches out over three days actually. On the Thursday after Labor Day each September, the returning Seniors come back to Grier to prepare for their jobs as "Big Sisters" to the new students. On that same Thursday, many international families arrive to see the school and meet some of the staff since parents living overseas may not be able to return for Parents' Weekend in October.

After touring the school and seeing the dorm rooms, these international students leave campus to spend one last night with their families before moving into the school. The Big Sisters and the faculty use Thursday afternoon and evening preparing for the busy day on Friday.

The Friday after Labor Day is the official day for registration at Grier and it is the day when new students are to arrive at the school to move in. Big Sisters and faculty set up tables outside by the school's courtyard so that arriving families may be greeted and directed along the process of registration. It is a busy day with plenty of possessions being unloaded into the dorm rooms, friendships made, and last minute details taken care of.

A luncheon is served at mid-day, followed by a "Parent Orientation" at 2:30 during which numerous key members of the faculty and administration are introduced to the parents of new students.

Sunset on October 3, 2007.

International students take a SLEP test of English from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. By 6:00, most of the parents have left and the school community is beginning to usher in the new year. The day ends with an assembly during which the Big Sisters as a group welcome the new girls and divide up into small groups so that each girl can get acquainted with others in the school. By 10:15, all are fatigued and room bell rings so that the day at Grier may come to an end.

Saturday is the day when all returning students must move back into the dorms and register for the new school year. New students tour campus with their Big Sisters and take a math placement test. There is always a shopping trip offered in the afternoon for students to get things they may need for their rooms. By evening, all students are on campus, ready to begin the new school year with mini classes on Sunday.
