All Girls Education VS Co-Education

Being born and raised in Saudi Arabia, I was always exposed to females being the weaker sex and men being the rulers over females in every aspect including job oppurtunities, etc. Everything in Saudi is divided into two portions. Men and women. Living here I went to a coed school my whole life, from Kindergarten to Grade 10, but when I opted to go to Boarding School, my decision was made. I wanted to try out an all-girls school.

At first, it seemed a bit overwhelming. See, girls tend to be more dramatic, moody, and talkative than guys. Having best friends who were girls and living with the same people was a challenge I had to overcome. I have a younger brother and have grown up sisterless. So, I truly had no idea how to live with girls and a roommate. In Saudi, I was the only girl in my family and got whatever I wanted. But, coming to Grier and sharing my space with a complete stranger scared me to bits.

It wasn't the fact that I would be away from home for more than 3 months at a stretch that made me nervous. It was the fact that I would have to be with two hundred girls. Girls tend to be so different from guys that only living with them would truly be experiencing it. Then again, at the end of the day, being with your friends 24/7 is also wonderful and if your friend is also your roommate it's good. I think girls should take the chance of living independent from parents to truly appreciate the fact that living with your parents is a treat! Being at boarding school means no one to tell you to eat, no one to tell you to clean the dishes, and no one tells you to the chores around the house. But, at Grier we have wonderful housemoms to take care of us all the time, which makes Grier a very homey atmosphere. When I think about it, every single person at Grier tries to make a difference in our lives by looking out for us all the time.

I think Grier is an experience every girl if given an opportunity should take and make the very best of, because the truth is that Grier has brought out the very best of me in every single way!

"WHERE DO GRIER GIRLS COME FROM?

Where do Grier students come from? Hmmm, very interesting, I would say from, all over the world!

We are perhaps one of the few boarding schools around the United States, who have so many girls from all 5 continents in the world!

I am originally from Karachi, Pakistan, but I was born and raised in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. I went to an American School called Rahima Academy from KG to grade 10. Every year my school hosted a boarding school fair which involved all the different representatives from various states in America. I missed the Grier presentation, and later had to go and meet Mr. Wilson personally with my parents, and he impressed us to the limit, where we immediately chose Grier as my final choice. I always wanted to go to a boarding school, for the very reason that it makes you well aware about certain aspects in life, and also gives the female child living in Saudi an opportunity to grow and excel. One of the many reasons I also chose Grier was because it had an excellent Psychology program, which I intend to pursue through college.

I was at such a point in my schooling career when I could not go back to my country of origin nor could I continue in Saudi, so the best choice, of course, was Grier!

Central Pennsylvania provides a perfect setting for a boarding school for girls. The area is very safe, with small cities scattered among very lovely hill country. Valleys between the ridges provide fertile ground for large farming communities. The seasons are well defined and generally last about three months so Grier girls enjoy all facets of the changing environment while at Grier. Airport connections and highways help to link the area to more metropolitan areas both in the Middle Atlantic region as well as worldwide.

For many students at Grier, boarding school is a first time experience with living away from home. Kids and families come to Grier with the hope that the school will provide a safe and supportive setting for students. In this setting, independence and maturity advance quickly. At the same time, a strong bond with parents develop.

Grier students do not feel as if they have been "sent away" to school but rather than they have been offered the opportunity of a lifetime!

The "Photo Gallery" is of special interest to first time visitors as well as Grier graduates!

PHOTO GALLERY INSTRUCTIONS
The "Photo Gallery" system is essentially a filing system for organizing hundreds of photos. Here are some simple instructions:

Click on “Photo Gallery”

You will come to a page that says, “Select a Gallery” There is a button that says “select” with a downward pointing arrow. This is a drop down bar that gives you access to 17 different galleries.

From this point you come to “Select an Exhibit” where you again see a button that says “select” with a downward pointing arrow. This is a drop down bar that gives you access to the exhibits associated with the original gallery you selected.

Once you do it a few times, it is easy. We currently have over 75 photo exhibits running on the web site with hundreds of photos.

Now is a great time to explore the Photo Gallery

They have known each other for almost 26 hours now!

In a typical year, Grier School welcomes students from over 20 states of the United States and from more than 10 foreign countries. Ours is a small community which prides itself in offering a home for all members of the community, regardless of their national or ethnic origin. After graduation, we hope that all graduates will look back at their years spent at Grier as some of the best years of their lives where their days were filled with friendship and fond memories.

Students are encouraged to make their rooms feel like home at Grier.

All of Grier School's students are full-time boarding students. This helps to contribute to a sense of community in which all faculty and students are important members of our large school family.

Each year the school year starts on the Friday after Labor Day. The girls arrive at school and spend the first weekend getting oriented for classes on Monday. Both Monday and Tuesday are half days of school followed by two hours of orientation activities. Groups of students and faculty circulate around the school to participate in egg tosses, yoga exercises, mind games, basketball throws and other group activities. It is a wonderful time for the girls and faculty to get to know each other.

For those who take pleasure in such things, Grier's website also offers a blank page!
